Donald Trump spent Saturday tweeting misinformation during an active shooting at Brown University that has already left two people dead and several injured. He incorrectly posted that the shooter was in custody, then followed it up with a reversal. Then again, Trump is the oldest man ever to be elected to the Presidency and recently posted he had taken three cognitive tests and admitted to two having MRIs within a span of 6 months. He also falls asleep during televised cabinet hearings, lies as he breathes, and is incapable of staying on message.
MAGA’s King and Daddy is ailing and dying before our eyes, and his movement is fracturing with Reeks unsheathing their knives and angling for the crown.
Rep. MTG, once a Trump loyalist, renounced MAGA and is now committed to “America First,” which is a slogan also shared by neo-Nazi Nick Fuentes and the ascendant Groypers movement. Indiana Republicans publicly rebuffed Trump and JD Vance’s request to gerrymander their districts ahead of the 2026 elections. Rep. Massie remains committed to releasing the Epstein Files despite the Trump Administration’s best efforts to cover them up.
As the economy nosedives, young people and Latino voters who went for Trump in 2024 are fleeing, with his approval rating now hovering around a dismal 36%. Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson are gathering disaffected MAGA voters around conspiracy theories and Christian nationalism, while other MAGA influencers are accusing each other of being sellouts and closeted homosexuals.
The pettiness is delicious, but it would be unwise and reckless to assume MAGA will disappear after Trump. They have already been radicalized and are moving further to the right, adopting Nazi slogans and white Christian nationalism. Furthermore, they are capturing young people and independents by going further to the left than the Democratic establishment on their critiques of Israel and the elite. If the majority doesn’t play our cards right, we should not be surprised if America sees its first neo-Nazi president in 2032, assuming we still have free and fair elections.
Author and political commentator Jared Yates Sexton, editor of Dispatches From a Collapsing State, has long warned about America’s move towards right-wing authoritarianism and how corporations, institutions, and the establishment will lay down the red carpet for a future fascist leader. Sadly, it’s happening before our eyes, but it’s not too late to stop it.
