AIPAC, right-wing billionaires, and corporate PACs spent more than 60 million dollars to defeat Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate Primary.
That is a ludicrous amount of money to take out a progressive, Muslim American candidate who calls out Israel’s genocide and advocates for Medicare for All.
And it still wasn’t enough.
Despite the best efforts of AIPAC and, yes, the Democratic Establishment, El-Sayed overcame a 10-1 spending deficit and unsubtle Islamophobia to beat Haley Stevens. Such a sentence would have been unthinkable to write even two years ago, considering the long-existing bipartisan support for Israel, which continues its occupation and apartheid policies against Palestinians.
Senator Chuck Schumer in February said his number one priority was to ensure Israel gets all the funding it needs. Democratic Rep. Hillary Scholten is vote blue no matter who, except, of course, for Abdul El-Sayed and any candidate who stands up against Israel’s genocide. The Dems spent millions trying to find the “liberal Joe Rogan” and were fine campaigning with Liz Cheney, but Hasan Piker is a bridge too far.
Well, they’re going to have to evolve or peace out, because Democratic voters are repeatedly telling them that AIPAC is toxic. The pro-Israel lobby spent millions to replace Jewish American Senator Andy Levin with Haley Stevens. They spent millions to take out moderate Zionist Tom Malinowski. They spent almost $20 million to influence the Chicago primary through anodyne-sounding names, such as Elect Chicago Women. They were again successful in taking out Cori Bush in Missouri; however, their influence is not only waning but also toxic for most Democrats who seek to win over the majority.
What does El-Sayed’s historic victory mean for the Democratic Party’s relationship with AIPAC, corporate money, and Israel, and will its leaders finally adapt, evolve, and listen to their own voters?
