At a breakfast gathering of Jewish leaders in NYC last month, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “I have many jobs as leader … and one is to fight for aid to Israel, all the aid that Israel needs.”
Before Donald Trump joined Israel in its illegal and disastrous strike against Iran, Schumer and other Democratic leaders tried their best to quash the Massie-Khanna bill that would force them to go on the record on whether they support war with Iran. Even as a majority of Americans loathe this war, Schumer and Jeffries have not been muted in their condemnation.
During the fall, Schumer and Democratic donors did their best to back disgraced politician Andrew Cuomo over an ascendant and wildly popular Zohran Mamdani. Even now, Donald Trump has been more effusive with his praise of Mamdani than the Democratic leadership. Schumer is more comfortable posing with war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu than with Mamdani. Although the latest polls show a majority of Americans sympathize with Palestinians and Democrats are cooling on AIPAC, Jeffries remains committed to taking money from the pro-Israel lobby that actively spends money against Democrats.
With Vichy Democratic leaders like these, who needs Republicans?
Sam Seder, longtime progressive commentator and host of the popular The Majority Report show, joins The Left Hook to explain why Democratic leadership remains bitterly opposed to its own base, and how the majority must mobilize to ensure we have a real opposition party committed to change.
