On this day in 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced freedom for Black people who were still enslaved two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The day was unofficially celebrated as Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, until President Biden declared June 19th a federal holiday.
For the past four years, the White House has publicly celebrated and acknowledged this historic moment. Joe Biden planned to show up at the historic African Methodist Episcopal Church in Galveston, Texas, to honor the day. However, Donald Trump couldn’t be bothered. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who never leaves her house without her cross, told the press, “I’m not tracking [Trump’s] signature on a proclamation today.” That’s because there was nothing to track as Trump, who shit posts against critics at odd times throughout the day, couldn’t muster enough energy in his little, pudgy fingers to acknowledge Juneteenth. That’s because he’s a corrupt bigot who spends his days grifting, golfing, flirting with World War 3, and empowering racists like Stephen Miller and Pete Hegseth, who want to drag this country back to re-segregation.

Although shocking, none of this is surprising considering America is currently being run by a white supremacist regime. Instead of cracking down on right-wing terror groups in light of Vance Boelter’s terrorism against Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota, Trump has decided to expand his war against immigrants. Earlier today, ICE agents were denied entry to Dodger Stadium parking lot, but they’ve already spent the past two weeks terrorizing the city of ten million people. As DOGE guts the VA, Trump showed up at Fort Bragg to hold a political rally and announced he will rename bases after Confederate generals - the same racist traitors who seceded and lost the war.
Trump is the same man who has unleashed Stephen Miller against legal immigrants and empowered Pete Hegseth to purge the military of “DEI,” which includes replacing qualified people of color with DUI hires. In 2025, “Mein Kampf” is suitable for Naval libraries, but books written by Black authors and featuring LGBTQ characters are not. White violent insurrectionists who attacked the police and tried to overthrow an election receive pardons and financial compensation, but Haitian immigrants are accused of eating pets, and brown immigrants are being kidnapped and sent to a foreign gulag without due process.
All of this is part and parcel of America’s long-standing commitment to protect and nurture white rage, which emerges every time the country moves even a single step towards equity and justice for marginalized communities. The modern culture war, also known as “economic anxiety” in corporate media, was ignited by Brown v. Board of Education. Unsurprisingly, Trump was able to come back to power by promoting lies around CRT, DEI, and Republicans spending $215 million convincing Americans that schools and liberals were forcing kids to become LGBTQ.
Professor Noliwe Rooks, who is Department Chair of Africana Studies at Brown University and author of the book Integrated: How American Schools Failed Black Children, joins me to make the case that the Trump Administration and MAGA are actively attempting to re-segregate America.
She says that it is, and always has been, racism and cultural anxiety that motivates a large minority in America to vote against their interests, and this explains the current whitelash against wokeness and progress that is threatening to destroy the country from within.
