“There are only two sides right now: Team Democracy or Team Autocracy. That’s it,” according to Julie Roginsky, editor of Salty Politics Substack and a Democratic Party strategist.
In this lively and wide-ranging Chai Talk, Julie castigates her own party and leadership - the very same she once supported - for being too timid, weak, and out of touch during a full-throated assault on our democracy by Donald Trump and his fascist regime.
We discuss the growing cold Civil War within the Democratic Party, which welcomed its lowest favorability rating in nearly thirty years. There is a divide between alleged centrist Democrats, such as Senator Slotkin of Michigan, who use Republican talking points to attack the base as “weak and woke,” and those like AOC, Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Crockett, who are aggressively taking on the oligarchy and embracing progressive politics.
There’s Vice-Chair David Hogg, who wants to spend $20 million to primary outdated Democratic incumbents, and James Carville, who refers to Hogg as a “contemptible little twerp,” and advises Democrats to play “possum” even as the base begs for fighters. There’s the oblivious Senator Chuck Schumer, who still thinks he should lead even after caving and helping Trump avoid a shutdown, and a thoroughly compromised Senator Fetterman, who should resign if even ten percent of the stories in the recent, blistering New York Magazine profile are true.
There is a vacancy for leadership in the Democratic Party, which can regain the majority and a moral center by fighting for the people, or destroy itself by chasing complacency, corporate donors, and MAGA voters at the expense of a multiracial democracy.
We break it all down in this Chai Talk.
