Have you heard about Donald Trump falling asleep during public events, spending nearly a quarter of his Presidency using taxpayer dollars to golf, and not knowing anything about his Executive Orders? Of course not.
Why? Because corporate media is still talking about Joe Biden’s health, even as the 82-year-old is no longer President and was just diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.
However, for the sake of “both sides,” the corporate media still holds its punches and decides to move the Overton window further to the right to avoid the bad faith whining, outrage, and retribution by a MAGA movement that still sees them as “the enemy of the people.”
Another reason why corporate media, like Paramount, is bending the knee to Trump is so they can ease the path for a lucrative merger with Skydance. This is why they’ve bullied CBS News, which they own, and in particular 60 Minutes, to ease up on critical coverage of the Trump Administration. They even offered to settle a ludicrous lawsuit with Trump, who is currently suing them for billions because he didn’t like the way they edited a segment with Kamala Harris. Unfortunately for them, Trump rejected the offer and demanded more money and an apology.
What happens, instead, if they fought back like NPR or Harvard University? What if they refused to bend the knee and sanewash Trump’s numerous scandals and decided to abandon a dangerous “both sides” framing in exchange for simply doing their job and holding the powerful accountable? Well, we’d get more classic moments of reporters asking Trump about the now viral TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out) meme and see him flip out in real time. More importantly, we would have an informed electorate that would realize the Trump Administration is about to steal their Medicaid and food stamps to pay for tax cuts for the rich.
I nvited my friend and fellow Mary Trump Nerd Avenger Brian Karem, a veteran White House reporter, columnist at Salon, and editor of the Reporters Notebook Substack, to give us an insider’s view as to why and how corporate media is failing us and what Americans can do to become better informed and fight for our democracy.
Give us a watch!
