The Democratic Establishment Has To Wake Up and Embrace Mamdani

Zohran Mamdani is the present and future of the Democratic Party and is poised to be the next mayor of NYC. The establishment's response is more Islamophobia, billionaire hit pieces, and contempt.
More New York Democrats coalesce behind Zohran Mamdani, but key holdouts remain

In less than a week, New Yorkers will head to the polls to elect their next mayor.

Currently, Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, is poised to become the first Muslim American mayor of one of the greatest cities on Earth. With a positive message of affordability, creative campaigning, and an anti-broligarcy message, Mamdani has generated unparalleled enthusiasm. He might even be the elusive “liberal Joe Rogan” that Democrats have spent millions trying to manufacture in a corporate lab. For free, Democratic leadership can simply embrace Mamdani and parrot his successful messaging to win over a dejected base and voting public that has turned on the party. However, that would require common sense. It would also require the Democratic leadership to reject corporate donors and their self-destructive fidelity to Israel. Unsurprisingly, Senator Schumer has yet to endorse Mamdani.

Instead, the establishment, which includes Democratic leaders and donors, has resorted to disgusting and shameful Islamophobic smearing in their desperate effort to neutralize Mamdani. This anti-Muslim hate has been embraced by Cuomo and is now a daily feature on right-wing media. Still, Mamdani leads by nearly 10 points. The takeaway is that the masses are resonating with his anti-establishment message. That also explains why the scandal-plagued Graham Platner is still competitive with the establishment pick, Gov. Janet Mills, for the Maine Senate race.

Democrats across the board are being helped by Trump and Republicans’ disastrous economic policies, and a government shutdown that is forcing employees to line up at food banks to feed their families. SNAP is expecting to run out of money within a week, and Medicaid cuts are around the corner. No wonder Trump is down 30 points on the economy and is posting some of the worst first-year numbers ever. This rejection of MAGA politics might just be enough to give Virginia Democrats a trifecta in the upcoming election.

Adam Parkhomenko and I unpack all of the political news in this episode and give our recommendations for the majority fighting back against MAGA’s hateful agenda.
