The Doctor Who Saved Sen. Tammy Duckworth Is Running For Congress: Meet Dr. Hamawy

Dr. Adam Hamawy is running as a grassroots, progressive candidate in the NJ-12 district, rejecting AIPAC and corporate money, calling for an end to Israel's genocide, and championing M4A.

In many ways, Dr. Adam Hamawy has achieved the elusive American Dream.

He grew up in New Jersey after immigrating from Egypt with his parents. He became a trauma surgeon and served in the U.S. Army, eventually achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 2004, Hamawy saved the life of then-Army Major Tammy Duckworth, who lost both legs and the partial use of her right arm after her helicopter was shot down in Iraq.

In 2024, now-Senator Duckworth returned the favor by intervening to help Dr. Hamawy evacuate Gaza, where he and his medical team were providing free services for Palestinians trying to survive a genocide. The horrors Dr. Hamawy witnessed in Gaza traumatized him and inspired his move towards more active political engagement. Frustrated by an establishment that continues catering to forever wars, corporations, and outdated talking points, Dr. Hamawy has entered the race as a Democrat to represent New Jersey’s 12th District and is seeking to replace retiring Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman.

However, this is not a normal race, because despite all of his accomplishments and amazing life story, Dr. Adam Hamawy is a Muslim Arab American who is against illegal wars, genocide, AIPAC, and billionaires. As such, he’s about to experience the usual hazing that accompanies any such individuals who want to shake up the system. One of his Democratic opponents, Sue Altman, has already accused him of “cheerleading and wishing” for dead Israeli kids because of his call for America to stop funding Israel’s occupation and genocidal regime.

It’s about to get uglier, but Dr. Hamawy remains hopeful that his New Jersey community won’t fall for the usual bait and has moved on from establishment talking points.
