The Golden Era’s Piss-Poor Economy: How Regime Gaslighting Is Collapsing Under Real-World Pain

Why official economic cheerleading cannot overcome the reality in working Americans’ wallets.

Here’s Danielle with a write-up of today’s Democracy-is!

The political establishment in Washington has always traded in spin, but the current regime has taken performance art to a surreal limit. On a recent edition of Democracy-ish, we dissected the stark disconnect between official economic narratives and the daily struggle of average citizens. From abysmal jobs reports to white-nationalist posturing inside the Defense Department, the illusion of prosperity is rapidly cracking under the weight of real-world pain.

The Economic Mirage: “Golden Era” or Golden Shower?

The administration has repeatedly promised a “golden era” for the American worker. Yet, the official September economic figures painted a vastly different picture: non-farm payrolls added a meager 29,000 jobs—failing spectacularly against the forecasted 84,000. Revisions for July and August further exposed the underlying fragility, revealing net job losses rather than growth. Unemployment nudged upward to 4.2%, and wage growth slowed to its lowest point in months.

Despite these grim numbers, administration surrogates like Kevin Hassett routinely take to national television to declare that all is well. In a bizarre spin of the data, Hassett insisted that a rising unemployment rate merely reflects half a million optimistic Americans rushing back into a “strong” labor force.

As I noted during the show:

“Donald Trump said, ‘I’m going to hold an event called the Golden Era of America.’ And all I’m seeing is piss everywhere. What are you talking about?”

This systematic gaslighting works when applied to abstract political narratives or foreign policy debacles. But as Waj noted, politicians across the spectrum run into a hard wall when trying to lie to voters about what remains in their checking accounts:

“You can BS Americans about nearly everything... But the one thing that is very difficult for any politician, Republican or Democrat, is to lie to people about what’s in their wallet.”

Failed Bribes and the Illusion of Relief

Faced with mounting public frustration over soaring grocery bills, utility costs, and a trade war inflating everyday supply chains, the administration has resorted to performative fixes. Announcements of $500 ACA refund checks mailed out to select households—primarily targeting those well above the federal poverty level—read less as economic policy and more as an ill-timed bribe.

Consider the reality of the federal poverty line, which sits at an astonishingly low $15,960 for an individual. Expecting families to survive on such margins in a hyper-inflated economy is delusional. Yet, instead of directing aid to the most vulnerable, the administration’s policy mechanics continue to line the pockets of higher earners while average workers struggle to buy milk and eggs.

When the underlying math stops working, propaganda loses its potency. Even conservative media outlets are finding it increasingly difficult to sell a “shit sandwich” when the public can clearly see the flies circling it.

The Quantico Circus: Turning the Pentagon into a Cultural Battlefield

While the economy sputters, the administration’s focus remains firmly fixed on ideological warfare. Take Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent appearance at Quantico. Speaking to high-ranking military professionals, Hegseth bypassed strategic readiness to announce the creation of an “Office of Religious Affairs” within the Pentagon, invoking biblical passages to frame national defense as a holy crusade.

This isn’t merely culture-war theater; it reflects a deliberate reshaping of state institutions. By purging experienced military commanders and replacing them with hyper-loyalists, the administration is transforming core government pillars into partisan tools. Combined with the privatization of defense initiatives—such as tapping Elon Musk to co-direct Pentagon projects like “Project Meridian”—the line between public service, private profit, and ideological extremism has blurred entirely.

A Desperate Regime Cornered by Reality

When economic lies fail and institutional guardrails are systematically dismantled, what comes next? History suggests that cornered political actors escalate.

With polling numbers sliding and the threat of legislative accountability looming, the regime’s reliance on voter suppression tactics, threats of invoking the Insurrection Act, and manufactured states of emergency become increasingly probable strategies. When a political faction realizes it cannot win on the merits of its economic performance, it stops relying on free and fair processes altogether.

The American public is reaching a breaking point. You can tell voters that the economy is thriving, but you cannot make them believe it when they reach the checkout counter. The gaslighting has run out of runway—and the fallout will dictate the future of American democracy.
