Five men, many of whom have been described as sociopaths, will have near-total control over the future of America's economy, military, and politics. Who will check and regulate AI tech barons?
Yes. That's why I disagree w/ David when (I thought) he minimized AI centers as significant, except that it was a tipping point. Centers' effects are truly distressing for many communities. I saw one photo of a mockup of a planned center next to the wildcats' roaming area of a major zoo. They're next to schools and other public areas as well. The noise pollution alone would affect them much more than humans even, and it bothers many humans.
Not to mention the doubling of utility bills and spoiling of wells in rural areas and other water contamination. Data centers are a major problem for communities.
One thing which brought out the protests faster was that they often affect wealthier suburbs. Those people are exceptionally vigilant about their property rights. Normally, a chemically polluting plant would be situated in low income areas where they don't have enough power to have say-so.
Otherwise, excellent and relevant conversation, guys!
Thank you, Waj, for always being on the side of humanity, and not afraid to say so. AI is anti-humanist and so are the broligarchs. They can all go to hell.
Why don't we - all 50 states - do what Hawaii did...No longer allow corporations to donate money to politics - to candidates, to those who are supposed to represent the people who elect them in our democracy etc. Get rid of "Citizens United" (which of course means corporations united against the people for their own monetary gain, which is now turning into AI gain and possible complete takeover of humanity). Kick the general corporations/businesses sociopathic AI people/leaders/CEOs business/corporations out of our government by not allowing them to pretend corporations are people with the right to "donate" money to those who are to be the people's representatives in government. THE RULES BY WHICH CORPORATIONS RUN IN EACH STATE ARE MADE BY THE INDIVIDUAL STATE LEGISLATURES. MAKE IT ILLEGAL FOR THEM TO DONATE MONEY TO PEOPLE RUNNING FOR GOVERNMENT OR TO PUT OUT ADS THAT ARE TO INFLUENCE VOTERS
Musk is a threat to humanity. Trump gave away the sensitive data of millions of Americans. This is a symbiotic relationship of shared values. Neither man gives a shit about people. They are more than just white supremacists. The rich are in another world. The Amazon worker that dropped dead, and the supervisor who told workers to continue work around the "body", that is the mentality! AI is the super tool, and if they can use it without regulation, it is a threat to all of us! turn off the fucking TV long enough to understand that your kids future is to become "livestock" for these oligarchs.
I recently saw an on-site outdoor interview of Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, and his remarks seemed so bizarrely disconnected from social reality that I began to wonder if his worldview (and that of the rest of the high-profile would-be techno-plutocrats) was the product of over-use of ketamine. This is a powerful recreational drug that, among other effects, creates a feeling of omnipotence.
Excellent analysis by Wallace-Wells. I appreciate the introduction to him. I'm so old I recall FDR ... albeit just a growlish voice on the thing we called a radio. But the decades have given me a bit of perspective and a deeply appreciate a voice, steeped in the era of cell phones, with human perspective :-)
Yep. Money is God in this dystopian oligarchy we now call home! Our "leaders" of both parties are easily bought, even though they know the consequences of unchecked technology and control by psychopaths who are only interested in accumulating wealth and power. They'd rather count the money the tech bros spread amongst them than count the days left in our republic. But the real counting, in my mind, is the number of days until the machines decide we are an encumbrance and they would be much better off without us!
All of that and it's also they get FREE electricity because WE are paying for it! They use too much water, they are too loud, etc. etc. They are ruining our environment!
I believe that it’s worse than you think. There is really no such thing as artificial intelligence. Touring machines work using binary arithmetic, which is limited in what can be expressed with it. The only intelligence on earth is based on carbon chemistry, that is on living things.
This means that there will never occur that singularity those idiots the AI Bros,as you called them, I’m waiting for. I could go on, but that’s enough for now. José Alfredo Bach
As usual you (the Left Hook) are simplifying what is a more complicated situation for reasons that to me are unclear because it does not help anyone. Yes there is a small group of people who have extraordinary power in the USA and THEY WERE NOT ELECTED BY ANYONE. I will give you that the names you mentioned are certainly some of those people but probably not all of them, certainly not all of their supporters who may constitute as many as 100 people, just a guess. Even if 100 people are controlling the USA government THAT IS STILL A BAD SITUATION. Any number of people controlling the USA government who are not officially elected or appropriately appointed or both to a government office IS A BAD SITUATION, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE LIMITED TO JUST FIVE PEOPLE! You do not seem to get that it is the SYSTEM that is flawed NOT THE PEOPLE. Yes we can do things to correct the system which I have mentioned many times before even on these posts, like for example changing how we elect the President, but they seem to fall on deaf ears because I do not think you really want to solve anything, you just want to make trouble. Easy to complain, but to solve anything? That is difficult but it can be done. Elena
Musk donated $25 Million in PA alone, to elect Trump. He offered million dollar lotteries to get VOTES! He is about to become a trillionaire. He can buy elections wholesale! ONE PERSON! To solve a problem you have to define it! The concentration of wealth is the heart of the crisis. They are banking on AI to maximize this leverage. How did Trump win in 24? Billionaires were told he would make them richer. You can't change how elections are run if you lose elections, by super pac money.
Okay. How does my idea to change the way we elect the President have ANYTHING to do with what you are saying above about Musk and donations ect???? I have admitted that I agree that "there is a small group of [unelected] people who have extraordinary power in the USA, I am not saying anything contrary to what you say above. You obvious missed my entire point, which of course is standard procedure for the Left Hook who just wants to make trouble and no legitimate practical solutions for the problem. I on the other hand offered a solution, you do not have to like it but I am not whining about the problem but not trying to solve it like the Left Hook does all the time. You do not have to take my solution, figure out one you like better and propose it instead of whining about the problem which again is the complaint I have against the Left Hook.
The damage from data centers to our water and our electric grids will be huge for the rest of us.
Crypto server farms and AI data centers cause very similar environmental damage.
Yes!

AI data centers and massive funding for ICE through the end of t-Rump's occupation of the WH.
Coincidence???
Welcome my son, to the machine. The clutches of Our Mad King Donald the 1st will continue to increase until we refuse to be abused by a sadist.

Too big to fail is the lesson of 2008

Bless you for keeping the focus 0n the inhumanity of these times.
This is the most heartbreaking/ infuriating part to me. So many hurt people for no reason but greed
Both The Terminal Man and State of Fear by Michael Crichton were really good books.

If you haven't boycotted Amazon yet, please do! Let's bankrupt Bezos!

Indeed that was fryday on your show and I was to late so I see it yesterday thank you

Again unless the Left Hook can come with practical solutions, they can whin all they want, it is not going to help. PROBLEMS NEED SOLUTIONS!!
Oh, that is not @Carole Cadwalladr .
