Secretary of “War” Pete Kegseth, a super Christian with Crusader tattoos on his body, spent $93 billion of our taxpayers’ dollars on ribeye steaks, shellfish, lobsters, salmon, ice cream machines, doughnuts, a grand piano, Apple devices, and even a flute.
The Pentagon, which continues to fail its annual audits, had to blow through the money by the end of the fiscal year or risk losing that money forever. So, instead of funneling those resources to help pay for hospitals, education, SNAP benefits, or our veterans, the former Fox host with a history of alcoholism, sexual harassment, and racism decided to go all-in on luxury goods and gluttony.
Apparently, his Christian nationalist church skips over the parts of the Bible that warn of greed, waste, and how difficult it is for rich men to enter Heaven, but I digress. Hegseth and his fellow cosplay Crusaders instead hijack Jesus as a warrior mascot to cheerlead and rationalize their white supremacist agenda. What was once an extremist cult is now the foundational theology of the White House and MAGA and represents one of the biggest security threats to America and the world.
White Christian nationalists were present on January 6th, and their quest for “dominion” over the United States is shared by Supreme Court Justices and some GOP elected officials. They are also not fans of women having the right to vote or the concept of separation of church and state. These are the freaks who are currently braying about a “religious war” and celebrating Trump’s “excursion” in Iran, which has killed 165 school girls and thousands of civilians.
Yet, corporate media and mainstream institutions still refuse to confront or even name this growing threat, even as they openly share their anti-democratic agenda, due to fear of offending conservatives and Christians.
Thankfully, Robert Jones, founder of PRRI and author of the forthcoming book Backslide: Reclaiming a Faith and a Nation after the Christian Turn Against Democracy, has done the research and is willing to call out his own community of believers. He joins The Left Hook to discuss the ideology that drives Pete Hegseth and Mike Huckabee and is leading to an erosion of freedoms at home and a war abroad.
