In 1982, President Reagan picked up the phone and called Israeli Prime Minister Begin, expressing outrage over the “needless destruction and bloodshed” resulting from Israel's bombing raid in Beirut, Lebanon. Less than thirty minutes after the call, Israel announced a cease-fire.
In 1957, Israel withdrew from the Sinai after the U.S. President Eisenhower threatened that he would call all the UN members to suspend both governmental and private aid to the country. Eisenhower also publicly condemned Israel’s invasion, which was coordinated with Britain and France in October 1956.
In August 2025, Israel announced it would continue its genocide in Gaza by fully occupying Gaza City and relocating Palestinians to concentration camps. Another name for that is ethnic cleansing. This is in addition to Israel’s current occupation of East Jerusalem and the West Bank, where Palestinians live under a system of apartheid and are facing increased violence from unhinged, extremist Israeli settlers.
U.S. taxpayer dollars subsidize these daily war crimes.
Israel would not be able to continue its genocide without U.S. financial aid, military support, weapons, or international cover. However, Donald Trump is unwilling to stop war criminal Netanyahu. Instead, he’s willing to betray his “America First” promise by bombing Iran for his “ally,” who just met with Republican Congressmen in Jerusalem during their recess. President Biden is also to blame for encouraging, enabling, and supporting Israel’s brutality against the Palestinians during his final year of office. Recently, Democrats, including Senator Schumer, took a bipartisan photo with Netanyahu when he visited Washington, D.C.
The world, especially young people, has had enough. People are marching in the streets demanding an end to genocide and a free Palestine. This includes the Democratic base and even some influential voices in MAGA. Unfortunately, the establishment refuses to listen.
What will it take for the United States and European allies to use their leverage to finally stop Israel’s belligerence and cruelty?
I invited Dr. H.A. Hellyer, a scholar and foreign policy expert who is currently a Senior Fellow in Geopolitics and Security Studies at the Center for American Progress, to explain how the United States could flex its power to stop Israel’s current regime. Dr. Hellyer has also published an informative piece in the Financial Times outlining what European countries can do to help Palestinians achieve peace and self-determination.

Former President Eisenhower has revealed in his new book, “The White House Years: Waging Peace 1956-1961,” that, in order to pressure Israel into withdrawal from the Sinai in 1957, he preferred “a resolution which would call on all United Nations members to suspend not just governmental but private assistance to Israel.
