Why Are POC going MAGA? Inside the Rise of the Multiracial Right-wing in America

Professor Daniel HoSang has done the research and explains the nuanced reasons why so many people of color voted for Trump and have gone MAGA. However, he sees an opening to win them back.

Donald Trump, a convicted criminal and fraudster, was able to win the 2024 election thanks, in part, to people of color.

How could Republicans, who are parroting white nationalist talking points, court and win over so many communities of color that they openly despise?

Why would so many people vote against their interests and align with a man and his cult that sees them as “invaders” and an “enemy from within?”

Professor Daniel Martinez HoSang of Yale University has spent the past several years compiling the research and data by talking to Black, Asian, Latino, and young voters who shifted to MAGA. The reasons are far more nuanced than simply “traditional values,” anti-LGBT positions, and right-wing disinformation. For example, a majority of Latino Catholics voted for Harris, but a majority of Latino Protestants went for Trump. Even though most Black voters went for Harris, he was able to poach some Black men who had abandoned the Democratic Party, which they feel tokenizes them and takes their votes for granted.

Some of the people who voted for Trump in 2024 also voted for AOC. Some of these MAGA influencers also resonated with Bernie Sanders’ message in 2016 and 2020. Some Asian voters in NYC who went for Trump are now going for Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist.

A throughline is that people believe the establishment and its institutions no longer work for them, and they are vehicles to help empower the rich and powerful at their expense. The “outsider,” economic populist message is resonating, and MAGA seems to have capitalized on it through propaganda, the culture wars, and various media spaces. The right wing has no tangible policies, but they can tap into this growing anger with more ease than the Democratic establishment, which is still unable to evolve, adapt, or abandon its corporate donors and outdated talking points.

In this important conversation, Professor HoSang reveals why so many people of color have been swayed by MAGA and the right-wing agenda and how Democrats and the majority can win them back.
