Social Security. Medicaid. Public Libraries.
These are all terrifying, blood-curdling, horrifying examples of the dreaded bogeyman known as (cue thunder and lighting)…DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM!
Most Europeans look at Americans with a confused curiosity, wondering why we pay taxes but don’t demand that our government provide us with affordable healthcare and free, quality education. They also don’t understand why we refuse to implement gun control even after we endure numerous mass shootings that kill our children. They also look at us with pity after a plurality of Americans decided to vote for Donald Trump in 2024, but I digress.
For Republicans and many Democratic leaders, donors, and consultants, the most dangerous threat to America is not fascism, income inequality, climate change, or deranged, sociopathic billionaires raping our kids and our national resources. Those can all be tolerated or ignored. The final boss villain is Democratic Socialism and progressives, who are notching up shocking upsets in primaries across the nation.
After Mamdani’s win, Democratic Socialists scored three more victories in New York, and 29-year-old Melat Kiros just replaced a 15-term incumbent in Colorado, which is not a flaming epicenter of progressive radical thought. Democrats who are moving to the left are gaining traction with the base, including Ro Khanna and Abdul El-Sayed, who is leading in the polls in Michigan, where he’s facing off against nearly $40 million from AIPAC money trying to crush his chances to be a Democratic Senator.
Common sense would dictate that the Democratic Party embrace these candidates and their popular positions, but they remain not only hesitant but outright hostile. It’s almost as if they’re willing to sacrifice the integrity of the nation to maintain their power and relevance.
I invite Dave Sirota, progressive commentator and editor of The Lever, to discuss why the Democratic establishment refuses to uplift its emerging progressive stars.
