Professor Eddie S. Glaude Jr. joins me to discuss why America has been unwilling and unable to confront white supremacy throughout its history and how Trump is the inevitable, destructive result.
I don't there were a lot of split tickets in the 2024 election. The numbers don't add up right-- I suspect Elon Musk and Starlink are the root of the problem.
You guys are right, of course. but I wish we had some social psychologists - who study the history of human behavior - or some such field, who can speak to the nature of “us/them” fear that seems to create so much hate everywhere, and throughout history. the tribalism, that wears many faces, and has existed throughout our histories, and which parallels and interacts with other societal structures (the family, power, wealth, war, industry, etc). To me, it’s this human trait that makes people vulnerable to the propaganda and manipulation by the powerful. We need to organize around humanism. I wish that we could make commonplace the framing of the conversations we all need to have, that rises above the imbalance of US history, but to a larger archetype of human behviors. So that people can move on. So they can learn and hope to be better. So they can learn to talk about what causes fear of difference.
’ve yet to hear ANYthing from Eddie Glaud, Jr. that I do not embrace totally. His perspectives are based upon facts of actual history and human experiences. It’s sad that our national origin story stands on the foundations of violence, genocide, slavery and delusions of white supremacy . We have emerged in many ways; showing we can compensate and repair some of the generational damage. We’ve instituted laws, which, if followed, provide relief from discrimination. All the while, well-meaning people are thwarted by forces striving to move us back to a time of heightened barbarism and hypocrisy. That’s our mission and vow, to protect one another from that tyranny.
In my opinion, there IS no such thing as white, liberal guilt.
People feel guilty when they have violated an important rule, principle, tenet, or people they hold dear, respect, or love.
White Americans have NEVER esteemed or respected black people as fellow human beings.
Therefore, they cannot possibly feel guilty.
What they DO feel is shame. Shame at being found out. Shame at learning and finding out that black people saw through them all the time, that they weren’t fooling anyone.
They feel shame and fear at learning maybe, just maybe the world perhaps is not what they thought it was.
I remember one of the water protectors at Standing Rock who told one of the military people that the people praying there were protecting the water for them and their children as well as for themselves and their children.

So, whatever it is it isn’t guilt.
The racism and the sexism.
