Why did podcast listeners and YouTube viewers go to Donald Trump, even though he’s an incompetent criminal who talks about Hannibal Lecter, whale psychologists, and was held liable for sexually assaulting a woman?
How come young people and the Democratic base stayed at home for a pivotal 2024 election? What is this called Twitch?
Why do people listen to uninformed comedians and UFC commentators instead of experts?
Why did UFC President Dana White thank YouTube personalities like Theo Von and the NELK Boys at Trump’s victory gathering? How can Democrats compete with a right-wing-dominated information ecosystem? What can they do to prepare for the 2026 and 2028 elections?
These are just some of the big questions folks are asking in the aftermath of an election in which a plurality of voters went for Trump over Harris despite her financial advantage, rallies with celebrities, and Taylor Swift endorsement.
Well, another Taylor, independent tech journalist Taylor Lorenz of User Mag, who is “Extremely Online,” has some answers, and she believes it will require the Democratic Party to radically reform their priorities, their identity, and their outreach to win over voters who are leaving the party.
Lorenz has her finger on the “internets” and is an expert on the current trends. In this important Chai Talk, she breaks down why a “liberal Joe Rogan” is not the answer for Democrats, but rather a new, radical understanding of how people consume their information and why they are seeking authenticity, two-way communication, and platforms that allow them to connect with their elected officials.
