How Will Israel's War in Lebanon Fail And Birth A New Cycle of Terrorism?

Lebanese reporter and author Kim Ghattas joined me from Beirut to discuss how Israel's expanding war in Lebanon is resulting in civilian casualties and is destined to fuel a new cycle of terror.
Israel Invades Lebanon: Precursors, Prospects and Pitfalls | Crisis Group

A year after Prime Minister Netanyahu has repeatedly and flagrantly crossed every single one of President Biden’s alleged “red lines” and engaged in numerous war crimes, the Biden Administration announced the U.S. will be sending Israel an anti-missile defense system operated by 100 U.S. soldiers.

Over 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed in what many describe as an ongoing genocide. The war has moved to Lebanon, where Israel’s invasion and bombs have killed more than 1,500 people and displaced more than 1 million people. In addition to a man-made famine in Gaza, there are now 2.5 million people in need of “urgent humanitarian food assistance” in Lebanon according to USAID.

Israel wants to dismantle Hezbollah and is open to pre-emptively striking Iran. However, this story is a reboot. Israel already invaded Southern Lebanon in 1982 and occupied the region until 2000. The original mission was to weaken the PLO, but as a result of Israel’s invasion and civilian casualties, Hezbollah was born. In 2006, Hezbollah and Israel engaged in a bloody conflict that brought about another round of immense civilian casualties.

In 2024, it’s like a reboot of Groundhog Day from hell.

Lebanese journalist, author, and The Atlantic contributing writer Kim Ghattas, who has written extensively about the region for years, joins me from Beirut to break down how this latest wave of violence will result in a new era of chaos.
