Across the Atlantic, both the UK and France temporarily kept the march of right-wing fascists at bay. It took a historic team-up between the center and left-wing parties in France to deny the right-wing, xenophobic National Rally a majority in the lower house of parliament. However with no clear absolute majority, France is about to enter a messy, political gridlock.
Regardless, it always warms the heart to see fascists weep.
I have looked to Rim-Sarah Alouane for the past decade as my go-to expert on France and Europe. In addition to being a legal scholar, she has accurately predicted the rise and normalization of right-wing policies and warned about how this trans-national movement is seeking white supremacist rule both in Europe and the U.S.
In this Chai Talk, Rim-Sarah acknowledges the positives of France’s snap election but also sees danger signs for fragile demcoracies, such as the United States, where women, people of color, and minorities are often thrown under the bus by liberals and centrists to gain power.
