If you’re lucky and privileged enough to travel outside the United States, you might stumble upon CNN International in your hotel room and be immediately taken aback by the stark contrast in coverage and reporting compared to what we must endure back home.

This becomes glaringly evident when the topic concerns Israel and Palestine. You just have to watch CNN International host Christian Amanpour’s commentary and interviews over the past year and compare it to the embarrassing drivel and IDF talking points promoted by CNN host Dana Bash. There is depth, knowledge, informed guests, and lengthy segments without nonsense shouting matches. You also hear from unicorns that are rarely seen on U.S. corporate news: actual Palestinians.
Currently, Israel is bombing Iran in what refers to as a retaliatory strike. The war in Gaza has killed over 42,000 people, mostly civilians, and expanded to the West Bank, Syria, and Lebanon, where over a million people have been displaced. The war threatens the election chances of Kamala Harris where thousands of Democratic voters are still “undecided” as a means of pressuring the Biden Administration to use its leverage over Israel for a ceasefire. Meanwhile, Trump is in Michigan today cynically courting disaffected Muslim voters.
Every single day, there is a fresh wave of war crimes and tragedies in Gaza that are forgotten while America marches toward a pivotal election. Thankfully, Drop Site brings the in-depth reporting and eye-witness coverage of news that we should be getting but rarely do in U.S. corporate media. The news site was co-founded by journalists Ryan Grim and Jeremey Scahill.
Grim, who also hosts the show Counterpoints, and is the author of several books, including The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution, joins me to discuss why U.S. coverage is so abysmal on Israel and Palestine compared to the rest of the world and how there is immense pressure and money dedicated to silencing and censoring those voices who seek to give Americans a full, accurate picture of Israel’s occupation of Palestinians.
