It should be clear to anyone paying attention that the Trump Administration is an aspiring authoritarian regime with little regard for democracy, the rule of law, or norms. It’s a grift in service of the inexhaustible carnal appetites of one man who quotes Hitler and aspires to be President for life. Their lies and corruption are only matched by their capacity for cruelty. Such an unprecedented attack on our democratic institutions should inspire mass resistance and mobilization, especially by those with privilege and power. Sadly, we’ve seen voluntary capitulation by corporate law firms, universities, elected officials, and media personalities.
Instead, they should all follow the example of Joyce Vance, editor of Civil Discourse Substack, author of the forthcoming book Giving Up is Unforgivable, and a former US attorney for the Northern District of Alabama who chose to resign instead of serving during the first Trump Administration.
In this Chai Talk, Joyce joins me to discuss what concerned citizens can still do on a local and state level to preserve our democracy ahead of the 2026 elections. We also discuss storytelling, cats, knitting, the Old Testament, and Lord of the Rings.
Give us a watch!
