How Donald Trump changed political journalism

I have long argued that the U.S. press, specifically corporate media, is broken and not made for this moment and built for this fight against rising right-wing authoritarianism. After nine years, they seem utterly atrophied in an outdated and dangerous “both sides” framing that creates an asymmetrical reality between two political parties.

Last week, MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell excoriated his own network and the press for giving Donald Trump free airtime to promote and mainstream lies and conspiracy theories in the guise of a press conference. The election is three months away, and something has to change immediately for people to regain their trust in the utterly craven and complicit fourth estate. But, how can the press evolve and adapt to meet the moment?

To answer this question, I turn to NYU professor of Journalism Jay Rosen who has been an astute and vigilant critic of the media’s failure to properly hold Donald Trump and MAGA accountable for their egregious lies and attacks on democracy.
