June 24, 2022.
That’s the day that sealed the political fate of Donald Trump.
The compromised Supreme Court packed with right-wing ideologues decided to overturn Roe v. Wade and send women back 50 years with their Dobbs decision. It was a long-term project in part funded and executed by Leonard Leo and The Federalist Society that groomed ascendant conservative law students. By a whisker, Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in 2016. Through luck, he was able to seat three Justices who were able to fulfill the MAGA fever dream of overturning a constitutional right to abortion.
It was a stunning “victory” for the right wing. It quickly silenced all the privileged, establishment voices who incorrectly assumed that MAGA would never actually do what they’ve been promising to do for years. The rest of us, who kept warning America, were like brown and Black Cassandras fated to see the trainwreck in slow motion but unable to stop it. It was the same feeling we had on January 6th, 2021, when many of us warned that Donald Trump would not leave peacefully. We were told that we were being hysterical and suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Well, Trump orchestrated a failed violent insurrection and Mike Pence certified the election after finally discovering patriotism and spine at the 11th hour and avoiding MAGA supporters who wanted to assassinate him for following the law.
Since then, the GOP did not moderate or jettison Trumpism. Nope. They overdosed on it. A majority of Republican voters believe in the big lie that Trump won the 2020 election (he lost). They also trust Trump more than their clergy, family members, and right-wing media. Speaking of conservative media personalities, just take a look at the stunning transformation of Megyn Kelly, who debased herself in Pennsylvania on election eve to campaign for Trump. This is the same failed NBC host whom Trump referred to as “nasty.” He also infamously said, “you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.” Fellow Reeks joining Kelly include JD Vance, Tucker Carlson, Ben Shapiro, Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, and Nikki Haley who have all abandoned their dignity to bow at the orange altar of Trump.
In the final run-up to the election, Trump has threatened violence against journalists, imagined violence against Liz Cheney, doubled down on misogynistic comments against Kamala Harris, referred to the liberal majority as “horrible people,” dressed up as a garbage man, allowed a comedian to mock Puerto Ricans, Black people, Jews, and Palestinians, promised to unleash the military on US civilians, and yet again quoted Hitler by referring to his critics as “the enemy from within.” This was the allegedly “serene” Trump who had changed after surviving an assassination attempt. He sounded just like the old Trump. Alas, some birds you cannot change.
All of this takes me to November 5th, 2024. Election Day. Karma will arrive with furious vengeance and ride on Valkyrie wings. Karma will be generations of women who never forgot June 24, 2022. They will include elders who recall losing friends and family members to unsafe abortions and lack of access to health care. They will include women who remember how they had to march, protest, and organize to have equal rights and autonomy over their bodies. They will include women who remember that this country denied Hillary Clinton a chance to be the first female President in 2016 so they could “feel great again” with a vulgarian criminal who bragged about “grabbing women by the pussy.” They will include fathers and husbands like myself who refuse to give their wives and daughters an inheritance where they become second-class citizens and MAGA handmaidens.
These women will be joined by first-time voters, Independent voters, former Trump voters, and a whole bunch of people of color, especially Puerto Ricans whose parents and families come from a beautiful island that has been deprived of self-determination for too long.
I know it’s bold and foolish to make predictions, but I guess I’m in a bold and foolish mood. I expect MAGA tears on Tuesday night. They will be sugar for my chai. I’m here for the petty because I don’t suffer people who support a violent insurrection and demand cruelty against the most marginalized just so they can temporarily feel “great again".
I look forward to welcoming our first female President.
On election night, Karma will be a Black Indian woman named Kamala Harris in a power suit.
It's Election Day. Behold the Righteous Rage of American Women and Witness the Ride of the Valkyries.
