"It’s a great day to be an American. It’s great to be a Republican,” said Speaker Mike Johnson after the House GOP embarked on the mass murder-suicide of the United States by narrowly advancing Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” from hell.
Well, it's a great day if you’re in the 1%, but it's pretty terrible for the rest of us.
With a 215-214 vote, Republicans spent all night making sure they could steal health care and food assistance from average Americans to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. They just voted to cut billions of dollars in cuts to SNAP, Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare and blow up the deficit in the process.
Even though this will directly impact, and in some cases kill, children, seniors, and low-income Americans in red districts, Republicans simply don’t care. They have power, baby, and they’re going to flaunt it. Donald Trump has already taken to social media to gloat, calling it “THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL” and boasting that it is “the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country.”
Yes, but tragically significant for all the wrong reasons, especially for Americans who live in rural counties.
I invited Jess Piper, editor of The View from Rural Missouri Substack and Executive Director of Blue Missouri, which helps elect downballot Democrats, to break down how the GOP bill will directly harm and destroy Republican counties like hers. We also discuss the GOP’s deliberate attempt to dismantle public schools and replace them with religious private schools and charter schools, which was dealt a temporary blow today with a deadlocked 4-4 Supreme Court decision.
