Take a moment to look at this recent NYT headline, which reads, “Two Palestinians Are Killed in a West Bank Clash With Israeli Settlers.”
Here are the opening lines of the article under that headline:
"Israeli settlers beat and killed a 20-year-old Palestinian-American man during a confrontation in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and a second Palestinian was fatally shot, according to Palestinian authorities and the families of both men.”
What explains the obscene “both sides” framing that utterly betrays both the reporting and the facts on the ground?
Here’s another NYT headline about Zohran Mamdani and a pro-Palestinian chant that he has never used.
Why is there “tension?” Because Mamdani has refused to condemn a chant he has never used? But that hasn’t stopped corporate media, Democratic leaders, and Republicans from alleging he’s an anti-semitic zealot. Meanwhile, no unconditional supporter of Israel - whether Republican or Democrat - has been asked to denounce the genocidal actions and comments of Israel’s current regime.
However, corporate media in America and the UK have spent the past two weeks writing endlessly about an otherwise unknown punk rap band chanting “Death to the IDF!” at a Glastonbury concert. Here’s a BBC headline from earlier today focusing on this controversy while ignoring that the IDF was ordered to fire at unarmed Palestinians who gathered at an aid site in Gaza to get food.
Which story deserves more attention, coverag,e and outrage?
Well, how about war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu visiting the United States of America and receiving warm support from both sides of the aisle? Maybe we should have some follow-up questions with Democratic politicians, such as Sens. Schumer, Klobuchar, Coons, and Booker, as to why they voluntarily took a picture with a man who has been accused of genocide and just recently dogwalked Trump and America into a potential WW3 scenario?
Democrats found time to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib, but so far, only a handful have made public comments about Rep. Fine referring to Rep. Omar as a terrorist. Whose lives matter? Whose stories deserve to be told? Which group is repeatedly asked to condemn violence and hateful rhetoric done by others? Whose voices are perpetually erased, demonized, or sidelined?
Mahmoud Khalil is an example.
He is a pro-Palestinian protester and Columbia University student who was kidnapped and detained in Louisiana without any criminal charges for over 100 days. Initially, only a handful of Democrats decided to publicly speak out in his defense. However, the people and grassroots leaders refused to forget him. It’s the people who have also spoken out for undocumented immigrants, the transgender community, student activists, and Kilmar Abrego Garcia. As a result, the polls have shifted in the past 6 months when it comes to supporting Palestinians and immigration.
In this important conversation, Zeteo’s Political Correspondent Prem Thakker joins me to discuss the obscene double standard and hypocrisies at play in American corporate media and politics when it comes to Palestinian and Muslim lives. We also make the case that the establishment is now atrophied on these issues, as the majority has moved on and demands leadership and fighters willing to side with the marginalized and occupied.
