Independent journalist and foreign policy commentator Terrell Jermaine Starr is a Black man from New York, currently in Eastern Ukraine, covering the resistance to Russia’s illegal occupation and invasion. He has also visited the West Bank and seen firsthand Israel’s dehumanizing occupation of Palestinians.
He has a unique insight, through his academic expertise and lived experiences, to break down the parallels between fascism at home in America, in the form of white supremacy and the Trump regime, and abroad under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu and Vladimir Putin. He is also able to articulate the need for moral consistency when it comes to standing up against oppression against Black Americans, Ukrainians, and Palestinians fighting for self-determination and freedom.
These perspectives also reveal the glaring double standards and hypocrisies when it comes to America’s erasure of Black, Muslim, and Arab lives. As such, I invited Starr to join me in this conversation to connect the dots as to the shared vision and tactics of fascists who are using a similar playbook against their manufactured “enemy” in the form of Ukrainians, undocumented immigrants, Palestinians, Muslims, and the LGBTQ+ community. He also discusses why the rise and multi-racial embrace of Zohran Mamdani in NYC gives him hope that people are ready to imagine and accept a new story in which intersectional empathy and solidarity can organize a movement for global justice.
