Tomorrow, America celebrates its Independence Day. On July 4th, 1776, the founding fathers declared that the 13 American colonies would no longer be disrespected, taxed without representation, and ruled by the British Monarchy, but instead emerge as a free, unified nation.
For nearly 250 years, democracy had a great run. Unfortunately, it seems we were unable to keep the constitutional republic safe from Donald Trump, his Republican Reeks, and the broligarchy. With each passing week and rubber stamp from the Supreme Court, Donald Trump comes closer to becoming an authoritarian leader with expansive powers.
Republicans, who control both the House and Senate, are content to neuter their own checks and balances to serve their “King” and “Daddy.” Corporate media, like Paramount and CNN, continue bending the knee, just like corporate law firms, and for what? To make more money and protect themselves from retribution. Billionaires and foreign leaders realize it’s all a transactional grift and treat Trump as a mark. Meanwhile, Democratic leaders are content spending their time destroying Zohran Mamdani and AOC instead of fighting back against oligarchs and fascists.
This week synthesized some of the worst predictions and fears Danielle and I have shared over the past three years. Americans will lose health care and food supplements so billionaires can get their tax cuts. ICE will now be infused with $175 billion and act as Trump’s Gestapo. Nearly every corporate institution still refuses to fight and paves the road for King Trump. Finally, Democrats continue to act like deer in headlights.
In this special edition of Democracy-ish, Danielle and I outline the threats we are facing and what challenges lie ahead as we try to enter the holiday with a mustard seed of hope.
