What will America give up to maintain its white supremacy and delusional narratives? Who will they sacrifice? How many people must continue to suffer and die to satiate the anxieties and rages of the few who must be cruel to feel great again?
As a country, we keep punting these “uncomfortable” issues even as they have led to the rise of Donald Trump and the mainstreaming of Nazi conspiracies and fears of “repalcement.” Masked, armed ICE agents are kidnapping brown people with the help of the National Guard and the military. US bombs are helping eradicate the Palestinian people in Gaza. Innocent immigrants are being detained without due process. A 33-year-old who just won a mayoral primary in NYC is being compared to terrorists simply because he’s Muslim.
All of these threads are connected, and until they are explained and confronted, America will never truly be able to live in practice the ideals it professes. Instead, we need to expand our vision and sights to imagine something better than the status quo narrative that has been promoted by a corrupt establishment that traffics in such cultural divisions and miserliness.
Princeton Professor Eddie Glaude, editor of the Native Son Substack, is such a person who can help guide us through these perilous times and articulate a better story of America in which the rest of us don’t have to police our voices and our identities to placate the cultural anxieties of racists and bigots.
