Those who foolishly assumed a second Trump Administration wouldn’t be so bad are getting whiplash this week.
As I’m writing this, reports are stating Trump is picking anti-vax, conspiratorial nut RFK Jr. to head the Department of Health and Human Services. We are officially making measles and polio great again, folks! Yay! Matt Gaetz is being tapped to be the next Attorney General and take on criminals even as he’s accused of committing sex crimes with a minor. Pro-Putin talking head Tulsi Gabbard, whom Russian TV referred to as their “girlfriend,” is being tapped to be the Director of National Intelligence.
Meanwhile, Trump is already flirting with running again for a third term, which isn’t allowed by the Constitution, but he doesn’t care since he has the Supreme Court in his pocket and said he’d “terminate the Constitution” and be a “dictator for a day.” Trump also has the Republican-controlled House and the Senate and the near-entirety of the fourth estate, journalism, that bends to his will.
All of this is overwhelming.
However, AEI Emeritus scholar Norm Ornstein, a prolific author and co-host of the excellent “Words Matter” podcast on Deep State Radio, reminds us that Democrats are in power for the next two months. President Biden is the Commander in Chief, and Democrats still hold the majority in the Senate. There’s a lot they can do with the remaining time and power they have to add some guardrails, limit Trump’s overreach, and protect our democracy.
The question is do they have the will to do it?
In this important episode of Chai Talk, Ornstein breaks down exactly how President Biden and the Democratic Senate majority could use the remaining two months to protect our democracy and restrain Trump from his dictatorial ambitions.
