“This isn’t just about protests here in L.A. When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation. This is about all of us. California may be first, but it clearly will not end here,” warned California Governor Gavin Newsom in a strong rebuke to Trump’s invasion of the most populous state in the country.
There are now more American troops in L.A. than in Iraq and Syria combined, escalating a manufactured crisis engineered by Stephen Miller’s racist desire to make America white again by any cruel and illegal means necessary. Even though the LAPD has repeatedly said the protests against ICE agents terrorizing their communities are overwhelmingly peaceful and under control, Trump has now asked for 4,000 National Guard members in addition to 700 Marines.
Trump is using the battle for L.A. as a blueprint for normalizing the militarization of U.S. cities and crushing any dissent to his increasingly fascist rule. To avoid subtlety, he referred to American citizens and residents of L.A. as “a foreign enemy” in his unhinged speech at Fort Bragg in front of hundreds of selected soldiers who cheered and hollered at their once and future king. Earlier in the day, Trump promised anybody who protests his expensive, tax-funded birthday party/military parade on Saturday will be met with “very heavy force.” Our freedoms don’t matter to the man who once said he wished to “terminate the Constitution” and quoted Napoloean and Hitler in the worst, dictatorial ways possible.
To combat this increasingly fascist regime, our establishment continues to bend the knee. ABC News fired correspondent Terry Moran for posting truths about Stephen Miller. 75 Democrats decided to join Republicans to “express gratitude” to ICE, which is currently terrorizing communities around America. The bar is so low that we are celebrating Newsom for simply meeting the moment with some passionate words, even though he has spent the past four months sanewashing MAGA talking points.
When Democrats do good, I have no problem praising them, but I also try to keep the receipts and remind people of their track record. What we need for the long term is a passionate, robust opposition that believes in something and is willing to fight for it, regardless of corporate donors and internal Democratic polls conducted by overpaid consultants.
As such, I invited friends Jared Yates Sexton, editor of the excellent Dispatches from a Collapsing State, and my America Unhinged co-host Francesca Fiorentini, who lives in LA and is the host of The Bitchuation Room, to add in the nuance that is missing from the sugarcoated headlines.
