White Evangelical Christians really love Jesus and Donald Trump. I understand their admiration for the son of Mary who fed the poor, served the marginalized, performed miracles, and sacrificed himself for humanity. But what’s up with their adulation and cult-like support for a twice-impeached vulgarian adulterer who was held liable for rape, defamation, and fraud?
For the past 9 years, we’ve seen this group stay loyal to Trump despite numerous scandals and acts of unadulterated cruelty, even as it costs them elections and numbers. But, they still won’t quit Donald. For example, ProPublica just had a fantastic and terrifying expose on Ziklag, a secret organization of wealthy Christians spending millions to sway elections.
Whenever I want to get a pulse on this increasingly radicalized movement, I turn to Robert P. Jones, a scholar, author, and editor of an excellent substack, who has spent years researching and writing on white supremacy and its intersection with American Christianity. What makes him unique, however, is that he also has the data, stats, and polls to back up his arguments thanks to his work with Public Religion Research Institute.
In this Chai Talk, we discuss not only why White Christians continue to flock to Trump, but how they are becoming more violent and willing to bypass all legal boundaries to gain power.
Also, we examine if there is a way to crack their coalition and potentially sway some members who are increasingly horrified by Trump’s cruelty and misogyny.
