It's Time for Democrats to Accept The Failure of Establishment Politics

If Democrats continue a top-down centrism that promises restoration while being beholden to billionaires and corporate donors, they will continue losing elections and voters. Here's a better path.

In the United States of America, a slim majority decided to elect an aging, criminal vulgarian who just posted a QAnon conspiracy about Joe Biden being a clone. That news story from Saturday night has already been erased from our memories and the headlines, because chaos, hate, and madness are the new normal during the Trump regime.

Instead of focusing on Trump’s severe mental and physical decline, in addition to his utterly reckless policies including a billionaire bill that will represent the greatest wealth transfer (theft) in American history in the form of tax cuts for the rich and gutting of Medicaid, we still have news stories about Biden’s health.

According to establishment, centrist Democrats, such as Senator Slotkin of Michigan, a former CIA analyst, fighting the oligarchy isn’t a winning message because it allegedly doesn’t connect with mass audiences. Well, thousands of voters came out to listen to AOC and Bernie, who tapped into the growing rage of the majority against an establishment that they believe increasingly represents the interests of the rich and powerful. In the 2024 election, some voters who went for Trump also sided with AOC. Despite both politicians seemingly being opposites, they share a commonality: they openly critique the status quo and promise change. The difference is that Trump is a con man who represents the 1% and sells a bullshit narrative that plays on grievances and manufactured culture wars. Regardless, Republicans rally behind him because he wins - barely.

Meanwhile, Democratic leadership keeps sidelining AOC and other popular faces because they don’t tow the party line or are seen as too “radical” and extreme, even though their positions resonate with the base. This is evident when it comes to the genocide in Gaza, which is supported by both establishment Republicans and Democrats who see no problem in giving war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu a blank U.S. check to ethnically cleanse Palestinians.

Progressive commentator Krystal Ball knows about the failures of establishment politics and the media. Before going independent as co-host of Breaking Points and Krystal Kyle and Friends, Ball was a Democratic candidate for the House and an MSNBC host. She’s spent years trying to convince Democrats to course correct and move away from the billionaire class and unconditional support for Israel’s occupation. In this Chai Talk, we talk about the failure of establishment politics on both sides of the aisle and what vision and story must emerge to win back the disaffected majority.
