Instead of “peace,” unity, and strength, Donald Trump has made “a bit of the old ultra-violence” great again in America.
Democratic Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in what Gov. Tim Walz described as a “politically motivated assassination.” State Senator John A. Hoffman and his wife were also shot at their home and are currently in the hospital. The suspect was identified as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, who had “No Kings” papers in his car and was impersonating a police officer. He is listed as a director of security patrols for a security group that drives the cars used by police departments.
Speaking of the police, a Florida Sheriff warned ahead of the “No Kings” protests that protestors who act violently towards police, including throwing a brick, will be shot and killed. “We will kill you graveyard dead. We’re not going to play,” he said in a presser standing alongside Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier. Regardless, thousands of Americans are marching in 2,000 locations nationwide to participate in the rallies to challenge and protest the increasingly authoritarian and corrupt regime of Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the U.S. military is joining the National Guard and ICE agents to terrorize brown communities in L.A. and rehearsing to perform in a parade in the nation’s capital for Trump’s 79th birthday.
Yesterday, the Marines detained a Black veteran for making the wrong turn while trying to go to the VA. On Thursday, federal agents assaulted and handcuffed Senator Alex Padilla for speaking while brown during DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s press conference. Noem, for her part, has since tried to gaslight America about the evidence they saw with their own eyes and has also promised to “liberate” California. This includes raiding 7-11 stores, Home Depots, farms, elementary schools, and arresting citizens and residents without arrest warrants.
“Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses,” Rage Against the Machine warned us over thirty years ago. It seems nothing has truly changed in America.
On Saturday, it was reported that the Trump Administration looks to add dozens of African and Central Asian countries to its growing “travel ban,” which originally was the Muslim ban during the first Trump presidency. For those who thought Trump’s fascist boot wouldn’t kick down their door, do you feel safer today?
America has a long history of conveniently scapegoating and sacrificing the most marginalized community, as well as its own collective freedoms, for the temporary feeling of safety. Just look at the War on Terror against Muslim and Arab communities that birthed ICE, which is now terrorizing all Americans, or look at the 2024 election when people succumbed to the anti-trans panic, which helped Trump gain many suburban and religious voters and ascend to the White House again. Black people have experienced this version of America since the beginning and fought to ensure it expands to become the country in practice that it has always performed in front of the public.
However, every step towards progress in this country has always been stopped by centrists, corporate shills, and establishment hacks who urge “civility.” They chastise the rest of us demanding reform and change as being too radical and angry. Those who remained neutral were ultimately complicit. Well, as we can see in 2025, fascism comes for everyone, even U.S. Senators, elected officials, and those who live in the suburbs and have citizenship.
In this Emergency Session of Democracy-Ish, Danielle and I discuss the breaking news of the assassination attempt against Minnesota Democratic lawmakers, the NO KINGS rally, and how the twin sins of racism and greed are killing this country.
Give us a watch.
