The moral arc of the universe bends towards justice, but only if millions of individuals realize they all have skin in the game and leave behind civility and personal comfort to fight for everyone’s rights.
That’s what happened today during the nationwide “No Kings” rally as Americans from all walks of life braved the weather and the threat of violence to protest an aspiring authoritarian. Meanwhile, in the nation’s capital, Trump looked miserable as he sat with his confederacy of Reeks attending his $45 million military parade. Hundreds of thousands didn’t show up, but terrible weather did and greeted the pathetic, sparsely populated event.
However, the crowds did show up in L.A., where law enforcement hit them with tear gas, horses, and flash bangs as they continue terrorizing brown communities to satiate the white supremacist wet dreams of Stephen Miller. Over in Minnesota, the manhunt for 57-year-old Vance Boelter continues as the police search for the gunman who impersonated a police officer and shot and killed Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. Boelter’s other victims, State Senator John A. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were wounded and remain in the hospital.
We now know that Boelter was a Trump voter who had a hit list with other Minnesota Democrats, including Rep. Omar and Keith Ellison. He was not a Democrat or leftist, despite what Elon Musk and right-wing propagandists are spreading on social media. Unfortunately, you can’t shame shameless people or a right-wing authoritarian cult beholden to a criminal and a media grift that relies on lies, conspiracy theories, hate, and racism. However, you can rise up against them and refuse to be cowed into silence and complicity.
The photos of the masses attending the No Kings rallies next to Trump’s empty military parade spectacle should finally awaken corporate America, feckless Democrats, media institutions, and premier law firms that MAGA is neither that popular nor that competent. These institutions don’t need to pre-emptively bend the knee and concede. They can and should fight with and for the people.
As today’s inspiring and horrific episodes revealed, this country is in for a long, generational fight between the majority and an increasingly violent, unhinged, right-wing minority. We have the numbers. Hopefully, pressure can help mobilize our alleged “leaders” to rise and meet the moment.
