After 15 months of bloodshed, we have a ceasefire deal to end Israel’s war in Gaza. According to the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the ceasefire should begin on Sunday as planned. Well, someone should inform Israel because it just attacked Gaza and killed at least 80 Palestinians since the announcement of this proposed deal.
Earlier this week, The Lancet reported that Palestinian casualties in Gaza have been underreported by nearly 40% and the total number of people dead, mostly civilians, is around 70,000. Pro Publica just released a damning article on how the U.S. State Department deliberately turned a blind eye to Israeli war crimes and allowed them to continue what Amnesty International now refers to as genocide. Despite all this, President Biden pledged another $8 billion to Israel, led by war criminal Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has deliberately crossed every single one of President Biden’s “red lines” and is openly committed to an expansionist “river to the sea” future without a state for Palestinians. There are also nearly 100 Israeli hostages still held by Hamas, and according to Yehuda Cohen, the father of a hostage, I interviewed last week, Netanyahu is to blame for delaying a ceasefire.
Of course, we all still hope for the best, but Palestinian journalist and analyst Rula Jebreal is also a realist. She joins me to breakdown this ceasefire deal, which was the same deal President Biden proposed in May, and the likelihood that it will be implemented and lead to peace and security. She also comments on how the war in Gaza has radicalized future generations, created permanent insecurity, and has thoroughly damaged rules-based order and international law.
